The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning the Ilorin Emirate Durbar as a flagship cultural tourism event, following a strategic high-level meeting with representatives of the festival’s organising team.
The engagement, held recently, brought together NTDA officials and a delegation from the Ilorin Durbar team led by Hajiya Fauridah Shagaya. Discussions focused on practical pathways for deeper collaboration aimed at enhancing the festival’s visibility, infrastructure, and appeal to both domestic and international visitors.
Central to the talks was the imperative to strengthen engagement with corporate organisations for sponsorship and partnership, secure high-level formal endorsements, and implement more robust promotion and marketing strategies. Organisers emphasised the need for sustained institutional support and professional guidance to refine planning and execution, ensuring visitors enjoy an immersive, world-class cultural experience that authentically reflects Ilorin’s heritage.
In his remarks, NTDA Director General Dr. Olayiwola Awakan underscored the Authority’s dedication to working closely with the Ilorin Durbar team. He highlighted the festival’s potential to shine on national and international platforms, stressing the critical role of broad stakeholder involvement from government, private sector, traditional institutions, and tourism professionals.
“The Ilorin Durbar represents a vibrant tapestry of history, royalty, horsemanship, and cultural unity. NTDA stands ready to partner in elevating this event, leveraging it as a key driver for tourism growth, economic opportunities, and national cultural promotion,” Dr. Awakan stated.
Rich Heritage of the Ilorin Durbar
The Ilorin Emirate Durbar is an annual spectacle held in the ancient city of Ilorin, Kwara State, typically following Eid al-Adha celebrations. Rooted in events dating back to the 1830s, it originally commemorated the emirate’s military victory against invading forces from the old Oyo Empire and Baruba warriors. Over time, it has evolved into a colourful celebration of royal pageantry, featuring a majestic procession of horsemen led by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, accompanied by traditional music, dances, and cultural displays at venues such as the Kwara Baseball Park in Adewole.
Unlike some northern Durbars tied strictly to Hausa-Fulani traditions, Ilorin’s edition uniquely embodies “Unity in Diversity,” showcasing the harmonious blend of Yoruba, Fulani, Baruba, Nupe, Hausa, and Kanuri influences that have defined the emirate for over two centuries. The 2025 edition, themed “Unity in Diversity,” drew thousands of attendees, including dignitaries, tourists, and international guests, reinforcing its growing profile as a model of cultural integration and peaceful coexistence.
Hajiya Fauridah Shagaya, a prominent figure associated with the organising committee and CEO of a leading travel and tours company, has been vocal about the Durbar’s untapped tourism potential. She has advocated for strategic investments, enhanced marketing, and greater youth involvement to transform the festival into one of Nigeria’s premier cultural tourism assets.
Strategic Significance for Nigerian Tourism
This partnership aligns with NTDA’s broader mandate to develop and promote Nigeria’s diverse tourism offerings as engines of economic diversification. By supporting festivals like the Ilorin Durbar, the Authority aims to boost domestic tourism, attract foreign visitors, create jobs, and preserve living heritage.
Preparations for the 2026 edition are already underway, with organisers extending invitations for corporate collaboration and guest registration. The festival continues to gain traction, having previously received promotional backing from NTDA and drawing participation from tour operators and cultural enthusiasts nationwide.
Stakeholders view the collaboration as timely, especially as Nigeria seeks to harness its rich cultural calendar — from Durbar festivals in the North to other heritage events — to enhance its global tourism competitiveness.
Dr. Awakan’s leadership at NTDA, marked by a focus on innovation, storytelling, and stakeholder synergy, is expected to bring fresh momentum to such initiatives.
As Nigeria continues to reposition tourism within its economic agenda, initiatives like the deepened NTDA-Ilorin Durbar partnership signal a deliberate effort to turn cultural assets into sustainable tourism products that celebrate identity while delivering tangible socio-economic value.
