Diageo Nigeria Graduates 157 Young Nigerians, Sparking Hope in Hospitality and Entrepreneurship

Vibrant celebrations filled a Victoria Island venue in Lagos on May 22, 2026, as Diageo Nigeria marked the successful completion of its flagship Learning for Life (L4L) programme. In partnership with the Lagos State Government and Celebr-8 Lyfe, the initiative equipped over 150 ambitious youths with practical skills, propelling them toward rewarding careers in the booming hospitality and tourism sector.

The first Nigerian cohort of L4L began with overwhelming interest — more than 1,100 applications flooded in. After rigorous selection, 303 participants completed an intensive one-week induction covering hospitality essentials, health and hygiene, personal branding, conflict management, and financial literacy. Ultimately, 157 determined graduates secured and finished an 11-week hands-on internship across hotels, bars, restaurants, and lounges, gaining real-world experience that bridges classroom theory with industry demands.

Women shone brightly in the programme, comprising 68% of the cohort, reflecting Diageo’s strong commitment to gender inclusion and empowering underrepresented groups, including people with disabilities. This focus aligns with the company’s broader global goal of fostering equal access to opportunities in hospitality.

Adebayo Alli, Diageo General Manager for Western Central Africa, described the moment as deeply personal and impactful. “This programme is very close to our hearts,” he told the excited graduates. “It was born from a belief to provide skills, structure, and workshops for young people entering the hospitality sector.” Alli emphasized that business success and community progress must advance together, positioning L4L as a catalyst for confidence, employability, and long-term economic empowerment.

Lagos State officials echoed this optimism. Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule, represented at the event, praised the partnership for delivering practical skills vital to economic diversification and social stability. “Today’s convocation ceremony showcases the importance of equipping our young people to become productive, self-reliant, and economically empowered citizens,” he noted, urging graduates to embrace creativity and excellence.

The programme exceeded its initial target of 250 participants, training over 300 young Nigerians overall. Many interns have already transitioned into permanent roles, delivering immediate boosts to employment and entrepreneurship in a sector hungry for skilled talent amid Nigeria’s push to grow tourism and services.

Learning for Life, Diageo’s established global initiative, continues its mission to break down barriers for those facing challenges in education and employment. In Nigeria, this collaboration with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) signals a scalable model for youth empowerment, combining industry expertise with government support to build a more professional, inclusive hospitality workforce.
As these 157 graduates step forward — armed with certifications, experience, and renewed confidence — they embody a brighter narrative of opportunity, resilience, and shared progress in Nigeria’s dynamic economy. Diageo and its partners have pledged to expand the programme, promising waves of impact for future cohorts.
