The Ghanaian Government has ushered in a bold new chapter in continental integration, as President John Dramani Mahama officially launched a landmark policy granting free visa access to all African nationals effective May 25, 2026—Africa Day.
Under the initiative, citizens of all African countries can now enter Ghana without paying visa fees by completing a straightforward online e-visa application. The new digital platform, launched alongside the policy, enables applicants to submit required documents, undergo necessary security vetting, and receive approval—typically within 48 hours—entirely online, eliminating the need for embassy visits or physical applications.
President Mahama made the announcement during high-level engagements, including bilateral talks with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, emphasizing Ghana’s historic role as the cradle of Pan-Africanism. “As a cradle of Pan-Africanism, Ghana believes it has a historic responsibility to remain open to Africans from across our continent,” he stated. The policy aligns with Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of African unity and supports the African Union’s integration agenda, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa clarified that while visa fees are waived for Africans, the process retains robust security measures. All applicants undergo full background checks linked to global databases, ensuring national security is not compromised. The e-visa system forms part of a comprehensive reform to modernize Ghana’s immigration framework, replacing outdated manual processes with efficient digital tools.
This move positions Ghana among a select group of African nations—such as Rwanda, Benin, The Gambia, and Seychelles—offering broad visa-free or fee-free access to fellow Africans. Officials anticipate significant boosts in tourism, business travel, intra-African trade, and investment, while strengthening people-to-people ties. Complementary infrastructure upgrades at Kotoka International Airport, including advanced 3D scanners, aim to facilitate smoother arrivals.
The policy has been widely welcomed across the continent as a practical step toward a “borderless Africa,” though implementation will be monitored closely to balance openness with security and capacity. As President Mahama prepares to assume the African Union chairmanship in 2027, Ghana’s initiative signals strong leadership in advancing continental mobility and unity.
