Lagos Strengthen Foundations for Sustainable Tourism and Resilience

In a powerful demonstration of forward-thinking governance, Mr. Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, alongside Permanent Secretary Mrs. Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, actively participated in two landmark events on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The high-level engagements underscored the state’s unwavering commitment to building enduring systems that safeguard lives, preserve heritage, and elevate Lagos as Africa’s premier tourism and cultural destination.

First, the duo joined policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, and young changemakers at the 2026 Lagos Leadership Summit hosted by the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy at Konga Place, Lekki. Under the inspiring theme “Building Systems That Outlive Us,” the summit sparked deep conversations on designing resilient institutions, visionary policies, and leadership practices capable of delivering lasting intergenerational impact amid Nigeria’s dynamic socioeconomic landscape.

Later that day, they attended the official launch of the Lagos State Flood Risk Insurance Policy at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island. This pioneering initiative, developed in partnership with Africa Re and an insurance consortium, forms a critical pillar of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda. It aims to protect vulnerable communities from climate-induced flooding while reinforcing environmental safety and disaster preparedness.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture emphasized that robust climate resilience and disaster risk management are indispensable for inspiring confidence among residents, visitors, and investors alike. By integrating environmental protection with tourism development, Lagos is not only shielding its people and assets but also securing its position as a safe, vibrant, and world-class destination.

These back-to-back events vividly illustrate the Lagos State Government’s holistic approach: forging strong, future-proof systems that blend visionary leadership, economic innovation, and cultural preservation. As Mr. Aregbe and the Ministry continue to champion these priorities, Lagos moves confidently toward becoming Africa’s most resilient and attractive tourism and cultural hub.

The vibrant energy of Lagos remains unstoppable – where heritage meets resilience, and ambition shapes a legacy that truly outlives us.
