The 2026 edition of the Lagos Fanti Carnival successfully held on Easter Monday, April 6, transforming Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island into a colourful spectacle of culture, rhythm, and unity.
The grand Afro-Brazilian celebration featured energetic street processions, captivating music and dance performances, heritage exhibitions, stunning fashion showcases, and vibrant community celebrations. Organised with support from the Lagos State Government, the event highlighted the rich legacy of the Aguda (Afro-Brazilian returnees) and their enduring influence on Lagos’ architecture, cuisine, and carnival traditions.

Positioned as a key driver for cultural tourism and economic growth, the carnival offered free general entry to the public, with online registration required for smooth access. Thousands of revellers, including community groups from Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, Olowogbowo, Epetedo, and Isale-Eko, showcased coordinated parades, bold costumes, and creative displays that brought the historic streets and square alive.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat were present as chief hosts, commending the event for preserving heritage while boosting local businesses, SMEs, and grassroots commerce.

The carnival builds on pre-event initiatives, including the Afro-Brazilian Economic and Cultural Exchange Summit held on April 2, which explored tourism investment and bilateral ties with Brazil.
This year’s edition reinforced Lagos’ commitment to leveraging cultural festivals for economic empowerment and global visibility in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
