Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading carrier, is enhancing its operations in Nigeria as part of its 80th-anniversary expansion drive, with a clear focus on supporting regional tourism and intra-African connectivity.
The airline, which has operated in Nigeria since 1960—just after the country’s independence—marked 65 years of service alongside its global milestone during recent celebrations in Lagos. General Manager for Nigeria, Firiehiwot Mekonnen, described the country as a “critical and valued partner” in Ethiopian Airlines’ 80-year journey, emphasizing its strategic importance for future growth.
In line with its ambitious Vision 2035 and broader expansion plans, the airline aims to grow its global destination network from 145 to 243 routes and significantly expand its fleet. These efforts include strengthening services out of major Nigerian hubs like Lagos to improve connections across West Africa and beyond, facilitating easier travel for tourists, business visitors, and regional trade.
Officials highlighted that enhanced connectivity will directly support tourism development by making cross-border travel more accessible and efficient, while contributing to local economies through increased visitor traffic and trade links. The move aligns with Ethiopian’s multi-hub strategy and its role as a catalyst for African aviation growth.
As the airline enters its ninth decade, this strengthened presence in Nigeria underscores its commitment to sustained partnership and excellence in serving the Nigerian market.
