In a bold push to unlock its vast tourism potential and drive economic growth, the Enugu State Government has earmarked ₦22.5 billion in the 2026 budget for the comprehensive upgrade of key tourist sites, infrastructure development, and hospitality facilities.
Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is positioning tourism as a cornerstone of its ambitious target to grow the state’s economy to $30 billion. The allocation forms part of the larger ₦1.62 trillion “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” with a strong focus on turning Enugu’s natural endowments into world-class attractions capable of drawing up to three million visitors annually.
Key Projects Under the Initiative
• Waterfalls and Natural Sites: Significant funding targets the revitalization of iconic waterfalls, including the renowned Awhum Waterfall — a scenic 30-metre cascade near Amu-Ugwu village known for its tranquil beauty and spiritual appeal. Other sites such as Iyinzu, Nwonwo, Opi, and additional waterfalls, alongside caves, lakes, Ngwo Pine Forest, and limestone formations, will receive upgrades featuring canopy walkways, boardwalks, and enhanced visitor amenities.
• Hospitality Boost: The historic Presidential Hotel, once moribund, has already been rehabilitated and upgraded to a full 5-star facility. This restoration, part of a broader hospitality ecosystem, includes modern rooms, suites, reliable infrastructure, and event spaces. Complementary projects like the International Conference Centre (ICC) Hotel (nearing completion) further strengthen Enugu’s capacity to host international conferences and leisure travelers.
Additional investments will support parks, leisure centers, museums, the Akwuke Sand Beach, Nigeria’s first zipline at Ngwo, and related infrastructure to create an integrated tourism circuit.
Strategic Vision
The state government is actively seeking local and foreign investors while creating an enabling environment for private sector participation. These developments align with Enugu’s goal to emerge as a premier cultural, nature-based, and conferencing hub in West Africa, leveraging its hills, forests, waterfalls, and rich heritage.
Stakeholders view the ₦22.5 billion investment as a game-changer that will enhance visitor experience, generate employment, boost local economies, and contribute substantially to the state’s revenue through increased tourism inflows. Implementation is expected to commence in earnest as part of the 2026 fiscal year.
Enugu is not just preserving its natural beauty — it is redefining it for global appeal.
