The African Hospitality and Tourism Education Summit (AHTES) 2026 will convene stakeholders across the continent in Lagos from July 24–25, with a sharp focus on skill development to address the growing human capital demands of Africa’s expanding hospitality, travel, aviation, and tourism sectors.
Organised by Tourism Afrikania, the summit returns to Victoria Island’s Oriental Hotel under the theme “Education for Service Excellence in Africa’s Travel, Aviation and Tourism Industry.” It aims to align academic curricula with industry needs, empowering the next generation of professionals through education, mentorship, practical exposure, and strategic collaboration.
Africa’s tourism sector is rebounding strongly amid global travel recovery, yet it continues to face a persistent skills deficit in areas such as hotel management, customer service, destination marketing, aviation services, and sustainable operations. This gap limits the continent’s ability to fully capture its share of international arrivals and maximise economic benefits from tourism. AHTES positions itself as a key platform to close this divide by fostering knowledge-driven solutions and building a competent, service-oriented workforce.
“The vision behind AHTES is to build a strong knowledge-driven hospitality and tourism industry in Africa by empowering the next generation of professionals through education, mentorship, and exposure,” organisers stated. The summit connects policymakers, investors, academic institutions, industry operators, students, and young professionals to drive real-world impact.
Key Highlights of AHTES 2026
• Day 1 (July 24): High-level keynote addresses, panel discussions, and masterclasses focused on bridging academia and industry.
• Day 2 (July 25): Educational tour of Lagos tourism sites, offering practical insights into destination management and operational realities.
The event builds on previous editions that have engaged over 20,000 young Africans annually across more than 15 countries. It promotes research, entrepreneurship, career competitions, and partnerships with institutions including universities, polytechnics, and bodies like NIHOTOUR, HATMAN, and others.
By emphasising practical skill acquisition and service excellence, AHTES supports broader goals of job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and sustainable tourism growth. Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial and hospitality hub, provides an ideal backdrop with its mix of business travel, leisure infrastructure, and vibrant cultural offerings.
As expectations mount, AHTES 2026 is emerging not merely as a conference but as a strategic catalyst for transforming Africa’s tourism and hospitality landscape through human capital development. Registration is open via the official Tourism Afrikania portal, with packages tailored for students, professionals, executives, and strategic partners.

This continental initiative underscores the critical role of education in unlocking Africa’s vast tourism potential in an increasingly competitive global market.
