In a vibrant display of cultural diplomacy and forward-looking partnership, Nigeria’s National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) joined the Embassy of China in Nigeria to commemorate China Tourism Day 2026 at the China Cultural Centre in the Federal Capital Territory. The event underscored growing bilateral ties in tourism, hospitality training, cultural exchange, and economic cooperation.
Led by NIHOTOUR Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Aare (Dr.) Abisoye Fagade, FIMC, FRPA, alongside his management team, the Nigerian delegation engaged warmly with Chinese counterparts. The celebration was hosted by Mr. Yang Jianxing, Chinese Cultural Counselor and Director of the China Cultural Centre.

In his goodwill message, Aare Fagade painted tourism as “a powerful vehicle for cultural exchange, friendship, peace, and international cooperation.” He praised China’s rich cultural heritage, innovation, and impressive strides in tourism development, positioning it as a global model of strategic planning, infrastructure investment, cultural preservation, and human capital advancement.
“China’s remarkable tourism story stands today as a global model,” Fagade noted, reaffirming NIHOTOUR’s dedication to deeper collaboration in tourism education, hospitality training, cultural exchange, destination marketing, and technology transfer. He stressed the importance of cultural experiences, unity in diversity, and sustainable partnerships, aligning these efforts squarely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for economic diversification and global competitiveness.
The Chinese side echoed this sentiment. Director Yang Jianxing called for stronger people-to-people ties, urging more Nigerians to explore China’s landscapes and civilization while inviting enhanced exchanges to foster mutual understanding.

Cultural Extravaganza and Broader Momentum
Attendees were treated to a colorful showcase of Chinese culture through student and staff performances featuring traditional dances, poetry, and music — a lively embodiment of the event’s global theme: “Enjoying Quality Tourism, Exploring Beautiful Landscapes.”
This celebration builds on recent momentum. In April 2026, NIHOTOUR and the Chinese Embassy advanced plans for culinary and gastronomy exchanges, training programs, and long-term institutional partnerships. These steps reflect broader Nigeria-China agreements signed during President Tinubu’s 2024 state visit to China, aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and communication.

Tourism stakeholders view the partnership as strategically vital. For Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with vast untapped tourism potential, collaboration with China — the world’s leading tourism powerhouse — promises skills transfer, investment inflows, job creation, and enhanced global visibility for Nigerian destinations.
Experts highlight that such ties support Nigeria’s drive to diversify beyond oil, empower youth through hospitality and creative industries, and position the country as a competitive tourism hub. China, in turn, gains stronger cultural footprints in West Africa and opportunities for outbound tourism growth.

As both nations navigate a dynamic global landscape, events like the 2026 China Tourism Day celebration illustrate how cultural diplomacy and practical cooperation can drive shared prosperity. With NIHOTOUR’s proactive leadership under Aare Fagade, Nigeria appears poised to translate warm words into tangible gains in training, infrastructure, and visitor flows — building bridges that foster not just economic growth, but enduring friendship between the two nations.
